In the dunes at 400 meters from the sea, steel-industry in the background and a village behind it. Until recently this was the site of a camping. Many photographers documented the site with photos of the camping and the looming factories resulting in surrealistic images: the greatest contrast between tourism and heavy industry. The village, however, did not like to be depicted thus. Therefore the camping disappeared and became a nature zone.

Eleven sculptors transformed the place into a sculpturepark to be proud of. Steel sculptures, made at the Steelplant(and in full view) surrounded by flowing dunes, the proximity to the sea and village make it a unique place to be.

How it came to be Wijk aan Zee was Cultural Village of Europe in 1999. Because of this the village invited eleven sculptors from eleven different countries to make sculptures in a building  of the Corus Steelfactory using steel donated by the same corporation. The sculptures were to be inspired by the place where sea, dunes, industry and the village meet.

In the search for sculptors the villages and countries participating in the Cultural Village of Europe lent their support. The Hoogovens (now Corus) steelplant lent a hand in providing materials and tools, and a place to built the sculptures.

They were made in a short three-week period, in may and june of 1999. Heavy cranes moved the art to its present location. The 16th of june 1999 a festive opening of the sculpture park was topped off with a visit from Queen Beatrix.

Deutsch: Ein Meer von Stahl

In einem Dünengebiet, 400 Meter von der Nordsee entfernt, liegt das Dorf Wijk aan Zee, und im Hintergrund das Stahlwerk.

Bis vor Kurzem war da ein Campingplatz. Mit dem Hochofen im Hintergrund hat das manche surrealistische Fotos hervorgebracht. Ein scharfes und seltsames Kontrast zwischen schwere Industrie und Rekreation.

Der Campingplatz ist verschwunden und es wurde eine unbestimmte Grünanlage.

Elf Bildhauer haben diesen Plats transformiert, in ein Bilderpark worauf jeder stolz sein kann. Bilder von Stahl aus dem Stahlbetrieb,Umgeben von den Dünen mit Blick aufs Meer und unter dem Schutz eines alten Fischerdorfes.

Wie dieser Park zur Stande kam Wijk aan Zee war im Jahre 1999 Kulturdorf Europas und hat in diesem Zusammenhang elf Künstler aus verschiedenen europäischen Landern eingeladen. Auf der Suche nach den Künstlern wurde ausgegangen von den Dörfern und Ländern die im Jahre 1999 mit Wijk aan Zee verbunden waren, wie Kulturdörfer, Die Künstler haben innerhalb von drei Wochen (Mai/Juni 1999) in einer Halle vom Stahlwerk Corus (damals Hochofen) jeder ein Bild aus Stahl angefertigt, inspiriert vom Platz wo das Meer und die Dünen, das Dorf und die Schwerindustrie zusammenkommen.

Das Stahlwerk hat das Stahl geliefert, die Werkzeuge und die Halle für die Herstellung der Bilder zur Verfügung gestellt.

Am 16 Juni 1999 hat Königin Beatrix dieses Bilderpark Meer vom Stahl festlich eröffnet.
